Westworld – my new TV crush

*ahem*

I mean, did you happen to see the first episode of the Westworld series? Because it was damn bleeding can’t-peel-your-eyes-off-the-screen good.

If you didn’t watch it then you should probably stop reading as I may accidentally spoiler-fy your brain.

Seriously, though, if you didn’t watch it then you really need to go and watch it now.

*stares*

It’s got everything – robot cowboys, ruthless corporate bosses, visitors who think nothing of blowing the brains out of robots for fun.

Plus, let’s be fair, a stellar team and cast to carry it along on its visually stunning course (we’re talking JJ Abrams, Anthony Hopkins and Thandie Newton among others).

And it has flies. Y’all gotta keep an eye on the flies. Especially when them there flies might be crawling over your eyeballs.

Also, milk – lots of milk, mostly associated with cold-blooded psycho killers. Kind of reminded me of A Clockwork Orange. Milk is one sinister drink.

And it has 3D printing and romance and a fantastic score rendering modern music in western tones.

But the greatest thing about it is that it’s a beautifully shot, very dark demonstration of our strange relationship with artificial intelligence and our sense of importance with our own, human, fleshy consciousness. It makes you wonder at what point it was ever ok to treat that robot in the many, horrendous ways that the ‘human’ visitors dream up.

It makes you question what it is to be human, and what it is to be humane.

On which note, I’ve got some damn high hopes that this series is only going to get even better, and I am not quite sure where I’m going to find the patience to wait for the next episode.

I shall also mostly be pretending to be a cowboy for the rest of the week.

This, fiends, stands to be better than The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones… there, I said it… but what did you think?

  1. Watched it and loved it! Think i will give it a re-watch over the weekend.

Pretty much agree with everything you’ve said. The cast, the direction, the music, it’s all top notch and the story itself is great. Think i read somewhere they have a 5 season story arc planned out.

Better than Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead… Hmm… i suppose time will tell. 🙂
