Flash fiction prompt: a monster and a setting for spooky season

It’s spooky season, undoubtedly the best time of year as the night takes a chill to it and the trees scatter their leaves beneath them. The smell of bonfires and hotdogs shimmers in the air as the moon gazes down, keeping watch over all the small magics of the lengthening nights. And I’ve always loved Autumn, Halloween, the blankets, the cosy nights in. And, of course, the spooky stories.

So for this flash fiction prompt we’re looking for your spooky stories. But rather than a prompt word or picture, I’m giving you the monster, and the setting. The rest is up to you. So grab your favourite D10, or head over to a random number generator of your choice, and randomly pick one monster, and one location from the lists below.

The monster

  1. Vampire
  2. Zombie
  3. Ghost
  4. Banshee
  5. Werewolf
  6. Witch
  7. Mummy
  8. Skeleton
  9. Siren
  10. Clown*

The location

  1. Library
  2. Cruise ship
  3. School
  4. Car wash
  5. Waiting room
  6. Bar
  7. Lighthouse
  8. Swimming pool
  9. Golf course
  10. Beach

And because it’s Halloween soon and I’m feeling excited, let’s aim for around 500 words, and a whole two weeks to work on the stories giving you until 1st November. Share links to your stories in the comments below, happy writing!

*A clown might not technically be a monster, but hey, I’m on the ‘well they’re still pretty damn scary’ side of that particular fence
