On an exodus of sorts

I am, as you might have noticed, a sporadic social media user at best. I tend to check in a lot, but not necessarily post a lot.

But I do love social media for the connections I’ve made—the writing community on Twitter (I can’t get used to calling it X) has provided me with so much inspiration, motivation and joy over the years, and the return of the FlashDogs with the Equinox challenge was one of my highlights of the year.

But Twitter certainly doesn’t feel like the place it used to be, and recently it’s mostly been spam profiles following me and notifications of every Musk post. Where it used to feel like a place where people came together to celebrate each other, to have fun, to be creative, it’s now a place that feels cold. I feel like many of the people I was there for may have already left, the platform has felt more angry, and I’m not in the headspace for that.

So I’ve packed up my digital bags and joined the exodus to Bluesky and, at the moment at least, it’s a refreshing and vibrant place that feels like it’s about community and friendship again. I’m hoping to meet new people as well as reconnect with old friends too. I’m essentially leaving Twitter—the odd ‘update only’ post might go out, but I’ll be hanging out on Bluesky and genuinely hope to see you all there. And I guess I’m writing this post because the move also carries with it an element of anxiety. There’s an underlying feeling of loss in anticipation of not catching updates from people that I’ve grown to care about over the years. So if you’re reading this and you’re also making the move, I’d love to reconnect on Bluesky – you can find me here!

And in the meantime, I’m still getting used to the new place but I wanted to shout out the Short Story Club which feels like a great way to read some stories and get to know people.

Hopefully see you there 🖤
